Using seeds from Jamaica which grow on an ornamental grass along the banks of Jamaica’s fresh water mermaid, who is the guardian of Jamaica’s fresh water ways, canals, rivers and streams, the seeds are picked according to the phase of the moon by local farmers as there is a time to pick and a time to not pick, the beads are then assembled by a community of artisans with disabilities. The seeds are associated with resistance and several stories are told by Jamaica’s maroon communities who are a group of people who were wrongfully kidnapped, marginalized and persecuted by the British during colonial times. So strong was there resistance that the British had to create a Peace Treaty as they were out smarting them and winning much to the British red coats embarassment.
